Model Enigma Machine

An engineering project to recreate the M4 naval Enigma using simple low-cost tools and materials.

The inspiration for this project was the often-read impression that manufacturing the Enigma in the 1930s and 1940s was demanding. The technology for producing watches and mechanical computers was of course well-established and could have been applied to this kind of machine. The element that was probably lacking was any thought of minaturising the electrical contacts. Whatever the reasons, to modern eyes the Enigma is clunky although the Abwehr version was somewhat neater.

This website will not replicate any of the basic explanations of the history, theory and decryption of the Enigma since this is well covered elsewhere, a few links of this kind can be found on the links page.
